    Rapid Reader supports **PDF**, **EPUB**, **Markdown**, and **plain text** files. You can also paste text directly, import articles by URL, subscribe to RSS feeds, or connect Raindrop.io for saved bookmarks.

    **Note:** PDFs must be text-based to work properly. Scanned documents or image-based PDFs cannot be read because they contain pictures of text rather than actual text data. If you cannot select and highlight text in your PDF, you will need to run it through an OCR tool first.

## Start Slow, Build Up

If you are new to RSVP, begin at **250 WPM** and gradually increase as your brain adapts. Most readers find their comfortable cruising speed within a few sessions. Rushing too fast too soon leads to frustration and poor retention.

## Speed by Content Type

Different material demands different pacing. Use these ranges as starting points:

The **Optimal Recognition Point (ORP)** is the specific letter position within a word where your eye naturally focuses for fastest recognition. In Rapid Reader, this letter appears in red, creating a fixed anchor point that words flow around.

## What is the ORP?

When you read a word, your eye does not scan every letter from left to right. Instead, it lands on a specific point — usually slightly left of center — and your brain recognizes the entire word from that single fixation.

The ORP is calculated based on word length:

**RSVP (Rapid Serial Visual Presentation)** is a speed reading technique that displays text one word at a time in a fixed position on screen. Instead of your eyes scanning across lines and paragraphs, words come to you at a controlled pace.

Common issues and solutions for Rapid Reader

Having trouble with Rapid Reader? Find solutions to the most common issues below. If your problem is not listed here, check the [FAQ](/faq) or [contact support](/support).

  <Accordion title="PDF not extracting text">
    **Problem:** PDF shows no content, displays garbled text, or only shows a few words.

    **Cause:** Your PDF is likely scanned or image-based rather than text-based. Rapid Reader can only extract text from PDFs that contain actual text data, not images of text.

    **Solution:**

    * Open the PDF in any viewer and try to select text with your cursor. If you cannot highlight individual words, the PDF is image-based.
    * Run the PDF through an OCR (Optical Character Recognition) tool first. Free options include Adobe Acrobat's online OCR, Google Drive (upload and download as text), or dedicated tools like Tesseract.
    * If possible, obtain a text-based version of the document from the original source.

  <Accordion title="Mac app won't open">
    **Problem:** You see a message saying the app "cannot be opened because the developer cannot be verified" or similar security warning.

    **Cause:** The Rapid Reader Mac app is not notarized with Apple, which triggers macOS Gatekeeper protection.

    **Solution:**

    1. Locate the Rapid Reader app in Finder
    2. **Right-click** (or Control-click) on the app icon
    3. Select **Open** from the context menu
    4. Click **Open** in the dialog that appears

    You only need to do this once. After the first launch, macOS will remember your choice and open the app normally.

  <Accordion title="Chrome extension not working">
    **Problem:** Keyboard shortcuts do not respond, the extension appears disabled, or the popup does not appear.

    **Cause:** Chrome extensions are restricted on certain pages for security reasons.

    **Solution:**

    * The extension cannot run on Chrome's internal pages: `chrome://` URLs, the Chrome Web Store, or the new tab page
    * Navigate to any regular website (like a news article or blog post) and try again
    * Check that the extension is enabled in `chrome://extensions`
    * Verify keyboard shortcuts are configured in `chrome://extensions/shortcuts`
    * Try refreshing the page or restarting Chrome

  <Accordion title="Reads disappeared from library">
    **Problem:** Your library is empty and all your saved reads are gone.

    **Cause:** Rapid Reader stores your library data locally in your browser or app. If browser data was cleared, or you are using a different browser or device, your reads will not appear.

    **Solution:**

    * Unfortunately, locally stored reads cannot be recovered once browser data is cleared
    * To prevent future loss, consider exporting important reads or keeping source files accessible
    * If using multiple devices, note that reads are stored separately on each device
    * Check if you are signed into the same browser profile you were using before

  <Accordion title="Speed feels too fast or too slow">
    **Problem:** You cannot keep up with the words at current speed, or reading feels sluggish and frustrating.

    **Solution:**

    * **Start at 250 WPM** if you are new to RSVP reading. This gives your brain time to adapt to the format.
    * Increase speed gradually in 25 WPM increments as you become comfortable
    * Match your speed to the content. Dense technical material needs slower speeds than casual reading.
    * Use **arrow keys** during playback to adjust speed on the fly

    **Problem:** Pressing keyboard shortcuts does nothing or triggers the wrong action.

    * Click directly on the reading area or display to ensure Rapid Reader has focus
    * Check for conflicting browser extensions that might capture the same keys
    * Verify that your operating system has not assigned global shortcuts to the same keys
    * On Mac, check System Settings > Keyboard > Keyboard Shortcuts for conflicts
    * Try using the on-screen controls to confirm the app is responding, then test shortcuts again

Import text, PDFs, EPUBs, Markdown, URLs, and more into Rapid Reader

Getting content into Rapid Reader is quick and flexible. Upload files, paste text, pull in articles by URL, subscribe to RSS feeds, or push content from AI tools via the MCP server.

## Paste Text

The fastest way to add content is to paste it directly. This works everywhere - web, desktop, and mobile.

Rapid Reader offers extensive customization options so you can create a comfortable, distraction-free reading environment. Build your own theme, use a preset, or import one from a friend.

## Accessing Settings

Open the **Preferences panel** by clicking the gear icon or pressing `P`. Visual settings are organized across three tabs:

* **Appearance** - Colors, themes, and color mode
* **Display** - ORP options, effects, and focus markers
* **Reading** - Typography and font settings

All changes apply immediately, so you can see the effect in real-time.

## Themes

### Preset Themes

Rapid Reader ships with several built-in themes including **Classic Dark**, **Classic Light**, and others. Each preset sets coordinated colors for the background, text, and ORP highlight.

### Custom Themes

Build your own theme by adjusting individual settings:

* **Primary color** — The ORP highlight and accent color
* **Background color** — Main reading area background

Once you have a combination you like, save it as a custom theme for quick access later.

### Sharing Themes

Themes can be exported and shared:

Organize reads with custom libraries, auto-categorization, and cloud sync

Your library is the central hub for all your reading content. Organize reads across custom libraries, search your collection, and keep progress synced across devices with Pro cloud sync.

## Library Overview

Every read you add lands in your **Inbox** by default. From there, you can organize content into custom libraries that match your workflow.

### Default Libraries

Rapid Reader starts with four libraries:

| Library      | Purpose                                                              |
| ------------ | -------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Inbox**    | Landing zone for all new content (always visible, cannot be deleted) |
| **Articles** | Web content, news, blog posts                                        |
| **Books**    | EPUBs and longer-form content                                        |
| **Docs**     | PDFs and other document files                                        |

### Custom Libraries

Create up to **6 libraries** total with custom names and icons. Each library can use an **emoji** or a **Lucide icon** as its label, so you can tell them apart at a glance.

To create a library, open the library settings panel and add a new one. Rename, reorder, or delete libraries as your reading habits change.

## Categorization Modes

Control how new content is sorted when it arrives:

| **Auto-categorize** | Content is sorted by source type — EPUBs go to Books, PDFs to Docs, web content to Articles |
| **Manual**          | Everything goes to Inbox. You decide where each read belongs                                |

Switch between modes in **Preferences > Library**.

## Organizing Reads

Keep your library tidy with these features:

* **Drag and drop** — Reorder items by dragging them to a new position
* **Move between libraries** — Reassign reads to different libraries when editing
* **Search** — Press `S` to filter your library by title
* **Bulk select** — Hold `Shift` and click to select multiple items

## Progress Tracking

Each read tracks your position automatically:

* **Auto-save** — Progress saves every 5 seconds during playback
* **Manual save** — Press `Ctrl/Cmd+S` to save at any time
* **Progress bar** — Shows percentage complete for each read in the library
* **Chapter position** — For EPUBs and Markdown with chapters, your chapter position is tracked

## Storage and Sync

### Local Storage

Rapid Reader stores content locally on your device by default.

  **Web app users:** Clearing your browser data, cookies, or site storage will permanently delete all your reads and progress. Consider using the desktop app for a large library, or upgrade to Pro for cloud backup.

### Cloud Sync (Pro)

Pro users get **bidirectional cloud sync** that keeps reads and settings in sync across all devices.

* **Automatic** — Changes sync in the background every 30 seconds
* **Conflict resolution** — When edits happen on multiple devices, the most recent change wins
* **Login behavior** — When you sign in on a new device, your cloud library replaces the local one

Cloud sync covers your reads, reading progress, library organization, and appearance settings.

## Backup and Export

Protect your library with the built-in backup system:

* **Export** — Download your reads as a JSON backup file from **Preferences > Account**
* **Import** — Restore from a backup file with automatic duplicate detection
* **Duplicate handling** — If a read already exists (matched by content hash), progress is merged rather than creating duplicates

Rapid Reader gives you precise control over your reading experience. Whether you prefer keyboard shortcuts, touch gestures, or on-screen controls, you can adjust speed, navigate content, and customize display modes to match your reading style.

## Basic Controls

The **progress bar** at the bottom shows your position in the text. Click or tap anywhere on it to jump to that location instantly.

## Speed Control

Adjust your reading speed from **50 to 1000 words per minute**. The current WPM displays in the control bar during playback.

* **Start slow**: Begin around 200-300 WPM when learning RSVP
* **Build gradually**: Increase by 25 WPM as comprehension feels natural
* **Find your rhythm**: Most readers settle between 400-600 WPM for comfortable reading

Speed changes take effect immediately without interrupting playback.

## Display Modes

Rapid Reader offers two reading methods, configurable in Settings under the Reading tab.

### RSVP Mode

The classic single-word display. Words appear one at a time with the **Optimal Recognition Point (ORP)** highlighted in red. This mode maximizes focus and eliminates eye movement entirely.

### Chunking Mode

Displays multiple words at once (3, 5, or 7 words). This mode feels more natural for readers transitioning from traditional reading and can improve context retention for complex material.

  chunk so the focal point stays fixed in the center of the display, reducing
  eye movement even further.

## Repeat Modes

Control what happens when you reach the end of your content.

| **Off**        | Playback stops at the end                                            |
| **Repeat One** | Loops the current read continuously                                  |
| **Repeat All** | Moves to the next item in your library, then loops back to the first |

Press `R` to cycle through repeat modes, or use the repeat button in the control bar.
